MHI and PUB Sign MOU on Advanced Water
Treatment and Recycling Technology
18 July 2012
- Project involves test-bedding MHI's technologies for industrial waste water recovery and recycling in Singapore
- MHI also announces an enhanced MIES to strengthen global presence
SINGAPORE, 3 JULY 2012 – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and PUB, Singapore's national water agency today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the research and development of integrated water infrastructure system for used water treatment and reclamation. MHI's first initiative under the terms of the MOU will be a test-bedding project at PUB's Jurong Water Reclamation Plant.
This test-bedding project will commence after the signing of the MOU with constructionexpected to be completed in the third quarter of 2013, followed by one-year trial and testing. MHI's Singapore-based subsidiary - MHI Industrial Engineering & Services Private Limited. (MIES) - will build and operate the test-bedding plant. MIES will incorporate a total system using the company's fully-integrated water solutions technologies for industrial wastewater and water recycling to achieve high water recovery ratios over a long-term. MIES will identify variables that hinder the achievement of high recovery ratios. The unique high-speed
Sedimentation equipment and leading-edge technologies will be utilized in the new plant to minimize plant space and maximize energy conservation.
Mr. Takato Nishizawa, Representative Director and Executive Vice President of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Limited, said, "We thank PUB for giving MHI the chance for the test bedding opportunity. MIES can offer effective measures to address the current challenges in used water reclamation. In this test-bedding plant, we intend to take in untreated industrial used water and target a higher recovery. Using the knowhow and technologies to be verified, we will develop and commercialize compact, high-performing and cost-saving plants to achieve Integrated Water Infrastructure Systems that are suitable for Smart Communities all over the world."
Mr. Chew Men Leong, Chief Executive of PUB, said, "At PUB, we are constantly pushing the frontiers in water technology development and we are very happy to partner MHI on this project to optimize the efficiency of used water treatment. Together with industrial water solutions and intelligent Water Management Systems, the water-waste-energy nexus are three new research areas that we are focusing on to further grow Singapore's water industry. We welcome water companies and research institutes to collaborate with us on novel research ideas and test-bed their new technologies and solutions in our facilities under actual site conditions.
At the MOU ceremony, MHI also announced that MIES, which currently engages mainly in environmental and chemical plant business, will take over and integrate the functions of two other local firms: the business development and administrative & management (personnel, IT and procurement) functions for MHI's Shipbuilding & Ocean Development and Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Systems business activities from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Singapore Private Ltd. (MHISP), and the business development functions for Power Systems operations from Mitsubishi Power Systems (Asia Pacific) Pte. Ltd. (MPS-AP). With the incorporation of all three entities into MIES, MIES will function in Singapore as the Global Business Centre for overseas business expansion. In preparing for the launch of new MIES, yesterday the three companies signed a merger agreement. To back the new initiative, MHI intends to increase MIES's capitalization.
MIES is being planned to perform a wide range of activities as a business development base for MHI's Shipbuilding & Ocean Development, Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Systems, and Power Systems businesses. These will be in addition to various areas now handled by MIES: namely, EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) operations such as CO2 recovery systems, gas/oil production facilities and chemical plants, as well as business operations involving material handling and water treatment systems and equipment. Plans also call for the new company in the future to strengthen administrative and management functions, such as general affairs & personnel, procurement& supply chain management, and accounting & finance, and to extend support to MHI group companies in the ASEAN and Oceania regions on those matters.
Currently MIES is conducting aggressive marketing and business development activities in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The Singapore government has recognized these activities as a boon to promotion of the city-state's exports. Also, a project being handled by MIES was recently granted export (comprehensive) insurance by Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI). Together these events lent further support to the proposal to have MIES serve as the succeeding company in the integration.
Mr Yeoh Keat Chuan, Managing Director of the Singapore Economic Development Board commented, "We are delighted that MHI is consolidating its Singapore entities into a new expanded Global Business Centre that will conduct high-value activities comprising engineering design, technology development and shared services. This move affirms Singapore's position as a control tower and engineering centre to effectively serve the fastgrowing industrial, infrastructure and environmental markets in the Asian region. We are confident that MHI will benefit from being a part of Singapore's vibrant industry cluster, in terms of talent attraction, technical competencies and project financing."
MHI will work closely with MIES and fully support the development of its business.
